Hat-trick: A look back at Tapia's three consecutive Malaga Open titles

Despite now having won 21 titles in World Padel Tour, Tapia has only been a repeat champion in two places - Vienna and Malaga.

Since returning to the WPT calendar in 2021 after a five-year absence, the only constant at the Cervezas Victoria Malaga Open has been the Argentinian, winning it all three times despite having different team-mates for all three of them.

Below, we look back at all three wins and their context as Tapia keeps gaining prominence in professional padel.

2021: Back-to-back champions with Lima

After a year and a half with Fernando Belasteguin, Tapia turned to Pablo Lima for the 2021 World Padel Tour season.

Things did not go swimmingly at first, but their first title would arrive in the La Nucia Open, right before Malaga.

This meant Lima and Tapia headed to the Martin Carpena Arena in fine form, and they would convert this into their second title in a row.

It was the first time in Tapia's career winning two straight tournaments - not so much for Lima, a three-time number one who has won as many as 11 in a row. La Nucia and Malaga would turn out to be their only two titles, however, as the Brazilian-Argentinian duo split later in the year.

2022: The charge for number one

A year later, Tapia returned to Malaga five more titles in his pocket alongside another former number one; Sanyo Gutierrez.

Tapia and Gutierrez ended 2021 together and started 2022 brilliantly, winning four of the first 11 tournaments - the same number as Juan Lebron and Alejandro Galan - and making at least the semi-finals at all times.

Like in 2021, Tapia headed to Malaga having won the prior tournament, and like in 2021, he made it back-to-back titles at the Martin Carpena, beating Pablo Lima and Franco Stupaczuk in the final.

The Argentinians were only a few hundred points behind Lebron and Galan heading into the summer break in the fight for the number one, but would not win a single title in the second half of the season.

Lebron and Galan, on the other hand, added six more to their tally and would eventually run away in the rankings to retain their crown.

2023: The Kings go into double digits

While he was chasing number one status coming to Malaga in 2022, Tapia arrived as the established king of men's padel in 2023 alongside Arturo Coello.

The Spanish-Argentinian tandem started the year winning 46 consecutive matches and nine titles, the second-longest winning streak in World Padel Tour history, while only yielding seven yets along the way.

Ironically, unlike the previous two years, 2023 was the first time Tapia travelled to Malaga having not won the previous tournament - he and Coello were eliminated in the Valencia Open semi-finals, their worst result of the year.

Alejandro Ruiz and Juan Tello awaited in the final at the Martin Carpena, but it would be Coello and Tapia who emerged victorious, winning their tenth title of 2023.
