It was not the only surprise on Tuesday at the Universidad Católica, as Spaniards Javi Martinez and Rafa Mendez managed to advance into the round of 16 after besting La Rioja quarter-finalists Lucas Bergamini and Victor Ruiz.
After missing La Rioja, seven-seed Pablo Lima and Coki Nieto were back in action in Chile, and were put through the wringer by Spaniards 'Tonet' Sans and Teo Zapata.
